Congress lawmakers from Telangana today ignored an invitation from party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad to come to New Delhi for talks, even as he received a delegation from non-Telangana regions, who opposed any move to divide Andhra Pradesh.

Azad told the delegation in New Delhi that they should "exercise restraint" till a decision on the Telangana issue is taken by the Centre.

He also urged the delegation to select a few representatives from the coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions and send them for the consultation process.

The delegation of ministers, MPs and MLAs from coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions of the state told him that the Centre should not take any step that would hurt the unity of Andhra Pradesh.

Senior MP KS Rao and primary education minister S Sailajanath, who led the 50-member delegation, told reporters after the meeting that they conveyed their viewpoint to Azad "very clearly."

"Azad told us that they will resolve the issue after talking to leaders from all the three regions," Sailajanath said.

The meeting came as Congress leaders from the Telangana region decided not to accept Azad's invitation to come to New Delhi for talks.

"Telangana people are hurt by his (Azad) comments that consensus and assembly resolution are necessary for formation of a separate state and that the Telangana issue should begin from zero.

"We cannot accept his invitation until he withdraws his comments. He needs to clarify. Then only, our coordination committee will sit and decide," Congress MP G Sukhender Reddy told reporters here.

He was referring to Azad's statement in Beijing that the Telangana issue cannot move an "inch" without the state assembly passing a unanimous resolution.
