This summer, marked by record-breaking temperatures, has left Amdavadis in a daze. To combat the heat wave, many are coming up with innovative, and cost-effective changes in their cars.

The demand for heat-beating car accessories has sky rocketed and many small-time car servicing companies are flooded with orders for internal screens, covers and curtains to protect the vehicle from heat. None of the newly sold cars have gone  without the new RTO approved films on the windows and back glasses, inform car-dealers in the city.

"The demand to affix RTO approved thin film on the car windows has risen by 60% this summer," says Neha Sheth from Kiran Motors. While many have opted for the usual options like detachable sun-screens and various car-accessories available in the market to beat the heat, there are a few who have turned themselves into car designers, like Dilip Chhabria who has made internal changes in the car's design to suit the clients' needs.

"I have tied an agro-net cover over the luggage carrier of my car," said Ramesh Shah, an executive at a national bank, who  parks his car in the open. "I have attached the green synthetic agro net used to protect outdoor plants from harsh sun rays, on the inner side of the car's roof. Having a two-way net keeps my car relatively cooler and I can hold the steering wheel without the help of a napkin while I head for home in the evening."

Similarly, Khoshali Vaishnav, 27, an educator at an IT firm, said, "I have affixed a corrugated cardboard sheet on the roof of my car which cost me just Rs700. It brought down the temperature in my car by almost 10 degrees."

There are also some who have focused on windows and front screens. Earlier, the use of tinted films to protect the interiors of the car from the sunlight was quite prevalent. However, with the new rules, the use of such films is no longer acceptable. Parag Patel, 34, an interior designer, said, "I have used net material for window car curtains. That protects the car from heat with an overall white cotton cover while I park it outside my office. This helps to beat the heat."
