After launching a referendum on the Lokpal Bill in the real world — Union telecom minister Kapil Sibal’s Chandni Chowk constituency — team Anna has now ventured into virtual world as it has now started an online referendum on the issue. The result of referendum in Sibal’s constituency is expected to come out on Monday.

Meanwhile, Anna Hazare is coming to Delhi on Sunday to decide their strategy ahead in view of Delhi Police denying them permission for his scheduled indefinite fast starting at Jantar Mantar from August 16. In a letter accompanying the online referendum form on the website of India Against Corruption (IAC), team Anna said, “the intention of the referendum form is to gather the opinion and votes of the citizens of India on Lokpal Bill.”

“After the protests by Annaa Hazare, the whole country is faced with the question - What kind of a strong Lokpal Bill should be passed which can be strong and effective in curbing the menace of corruption? On one side, are the proposals presented by Anna Hazare, on the other side are the proposals of the government. This letter puts in front of you some of the proposals from both the sides without taking sides,” it said.

The activists said it would allow them to know what ordinary citizens of India want. “We will also take the results to the MP in your constituency, and show them what the people they represent want,” the activists added. They appealed from people to get the form filled by each voter member of their family.

The referendum has queries on inclusion of complete bureaucracy, prime minister, judiciary and acts of MPs inside parliament under Lokpal’s ambit. It also has questions on one Lokpal Act setting up Lokpal at centre and Lokayuktas at state level, citizen charters and merging of CBI’s anti corruption body in Lokpal.
