Tamil Nadu pays rich tributes to Rajiv Gandhi

Tamil Nadu today joined rest of the nation in paying rich tributes to former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated at Sriperumbudur near here, on his 19th death anniversary.

Chief minister M Karunanidhi paid floral tributes to the late prime minister at army parade ground in the secretariat complex and administered anti-terrorism pledge to his cabinet colleagues and government employees as the day is also observed as Anti-Terrorism Day.

K Vivekanandan, deputy secretary to the governor, also administered an anti-terrorism pledge to the officers and staff at the Raj Bhavan.

State Congress president KV Thankgabalu and party workers paid floral tributes to the departed leader at Satyamurthi Bhavan, the party's state headquarters here.
 
Rajiv Gandhi, the 7th prime minister of the country, was killed in 1991 during an election meeting when a woman suicide bomber detonated herself.
