A day after chief minister Nitish Kumar attacked Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi for alleging corruption in Bihar, the ruling NDA in the state today said that the 'sycophants' within the party were "trying to upgrade Gandhi's status."

"Rahul Gandhi enjoys his present position in the party because of sycophants within the party who are trying to further upgrade Amethi MP's status", state NDA convenor NK Yadav told reporters.

The chief minister, while taking a swipe at Gandhi for his attack on the NDA government, had yesterday asked Gandhi to first become chief minister of a state to learn governance before aspiring to become prime minister.

Dubbing Rahul as a 'prime ministerial candidate' for the Congress, Yadav alleged that such type of people within the Congress had trangressed the limits of mental bankruptcy and were now comparing Gandhi with great personalities like Mahatma Gandhi and founder of the Sampoorna Kranti Jaiprakash Narayan and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

"Be it Mahatma Gandhi, Jaiprakash Narayan or Vajpayee, they attained the stature because of their longstanding contributions and sacrifices", he said, adding if the Congress leaders believed that they could upgrade the image and status of Rahul Gandhi through 'sycophancy', then they were living in fool's paradise.

Yadav also lambasted Gandhi for his statement that the Congress alone could rid the country of poverty and alleged that the party ruled Bihar for more than 40 years and the country... and was still ruling the country but had done nothing for eradication of poverty.

Taking a dig at Gandhi for his charge of corruption in Bihar, the state NDA leader said "Rahul should first clarify the position about corruption in the states ruled by the Congress and also in Delhi."

Yadav ridiculed RJD supremo Lalu Prasad for his claim that the NDA would fail to open its account in the first four phases of polls in Bihar to 182 seats and asserted that the NDA would have 'a clean sweep' in the elections this time.
