With eleven patients with symptoms of suspected swine flu on Friday, the number of patients who are under home quarantine has crossed 50 in Vadodara. Many patients now prefer to get treated at home which is more convenient.

“The patients suffering from mild symptoms of flu are treated under home quarantine. This method is being adopted across other cities in the country as it requires fewer resources. The patients are instructed to keep themselves isolated at their residences and avoid coming in contact with others during their treatment. The blood samples are collected by the officials and sent for the investigations,” Dr AK Saxena said.

The concept of home quarantine is not new. In western countries, the concept is widely followed but with value addition to it even in normal flu.  “In UK, if any person is suspected with flu, he directly contacts health offcials who then assign a ‘Flu friends’. Flu friend is a term used for a person who rushes to help the patients suffering from symptoms of flu. The patient is not allowed to interact with anyone,” said Dr Tushar Choksi. With proper medication, a patient under home quarantine can be treated in a smmoth manner and can recover fast. Moreover, the patients also find it comfortable to be home and get treated.

Two patients with suspected symptoms were admitted at the nursing home of SSG hospital. Medical superintendent Dr AK Saxena said, “One of the patients is a 22-year-old youth of Limda village near Waghodia and another is a 48-year-old man from Subhanpura. They both have been admitted to the nursing home following the symptoms of the swine flu. Three patients have been discharged already.”

Meanwhile, one more suspected swine flu patient was detected at new civil hospital in Surat on Friday. The 30-year-old youth from Surat city was traced of having symptoms of swine flu. The youth was given preliminary treatment and asked to continue treatment from home. His samples have been sent to BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad for testing.
