Swine flu claimed two more lives, including an 18-month-old kid, in Surat and one in Ahmedabad on Sunday. With this, the death toll due to the disease has risen to 26 in the state and 11 in Surat.

A spurt in swine flu has resulted in patients flocking to various hospitals in the diamond city. At present, isolation wards of all major hospitals are packed with patients.

According to information, Jagriti Jasani, 25, a resident of Yogi Darshan Society in Varachha, died on Sunday, while getting treatment at the isolation ward of New Civil Hospital. Jagriti was admitted to the hospital on September 16 with symptoms similar to swine flu and her blood samples sent to B J Medical College in Ahmedabad tested positive.

Doctors quarantined her family members and provided treatment to all of them. In another case, an 18-month-old girl, Rudrakumari Baldaniya, a resident of Smith row house, Parvat Patia, died due to swine flu at Mahavir Hospital on Sunday. The child was admitted to the hospital two days back with high fever, bad cough and sore throat. It is not known how Rudrakumari got infected with the disease.

In Ahmedabad, Shankar Patel (38) succumbed to the disease at the Civil Hospital on Sunday morning. Apart from these deaths, seven more suspected swine flu patients were
detected during medical screening of patients at various hospitals. The continuous flow of patients has put  the authorities of hospitals tasked with swine flu treatment in a tight corner, as their wards have no space for new patients.

"We have 14 beds in our isolation ward and all of them are occupied. Any suspected swine flu patient is now referred to other hospitals like SMIMER, Mahavir and others, who are handling these cases. But these hospitals are also unable to handle the continuous flow and at present, isolation wards in most hospitals are full. The situation can worsen if additional arrangements are not made shortly," R Burman, a doctor at New Civil Hospital, said.

He added that authorities of New Civil Hospital are planning to create another ward for swine flu patients. A decision in this regard is awaited from the state government. On Saturday, two persons had died of swine flu in the city.  They were 20-year-old Meena Dubey, a resident of Pandesara. The other patient was 49-year-old Arju Avaiya, a resident of Varachha.
