Diwali! And the first thing that comes to the mind is loads of laddoo, peda, kaju katli, barfi, chocolates and more of those calories-ridden sweets that Diwali make this festival a favourite. But remember this: 'a minute on our lips…a lifetime on our hips'!
So to avoid all those guilt feelings, here are some tips from the city’s dieticians on how to make this Diwali a happier affair.

Pooja Makhija, consulting dietician with a clientele including Karan Johar, Sonakshi Sinha, Sonam Kapoor (the flab to fit celebs) says, “One must indulge in the festivities, enjoyment and show of love for one’s near and dear ones rather than showing inclination towards eating sweets. Moreover, most people in metro cities want to look skinny during the festival. They should realise that being healthy is what they should aim for." Agrees Bindu Shah, another dietician who says, “Festive season is all about enjoyment but we should not associate it with overeating. A person’s rate of burning calories drops each decade so it becomes tougher to lose weight.”

You can make sweets using naturally sweet ingredients. This calls for the use of dry fruits like anjeer or dried figs or apricots to make delicious but healthy and low calorie sweets to gorge on and serve this festive season. Using dried fruits as the base and later adding other nuts including almonds, walnuts and pistachios make the preparations delicious.

Also, bring in more warmth, love and togetherness this Diwali with some homemade sweets. Good options could be kheer or phirni (sweet made from skimmed milk) or puddings (with fruits, skimmed milk custard, jelly) or our traditional mithai with less sugar and/or less ghee or khoya.
