A Surat-based fashion designer has made a massive bag, the first of its kind in the city and perhaps in India. Mrugesh Parmar, 23, embarked on the Herculean task of making the bag all on his own as he wanted to do something special.

His feat has secured a place in the Limca Book of Records and the process has been initiated to register it in the Guinness book. The Limca record certificate will be issued in 2012.

The resident of Adajan made the bag which is 10 m wide and 8 m high. The bag's handle measures 3 m. Like the size, the materials used to make the bag are also novel. Parmar has used pieces of cloths that remain after cutting dress material.

Interestingly, he completed the bag in just 48 hours. "I started stitching the bag on August 17 and finished it on the evening of August 19. I stitched continuously to complete the work in the shortest possible time," Parmar said.

According to him, the bag made by him is higher and wider than the one recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. The current record of largest bag made of jute measures 3.42 m (11.15 ft) high (not including handles) and 4.3 m (14.11 ft) wide.

The bag was made for Tesco PLC by Jutexpo Ltd and was unveiled in Debach Airfield, Ipswich, UK, on April 18, 2011.

Interestingly, Parmar has earlier attained a place twice in the Limca Book for his unique work. In 2008, his name got recorded in the book for stitching 3,000 buttons in a shirt. He was again issued a certificate for making 2,995 holes in a pant.
