At a time when undertrials at the crowded Tihar prisons are struggling for space, sacked CWG Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi, who was remanded in judicial custody today in connection with irregularities in the run-up to the mega event, has been given a seperate cell.
Jail officials cited "security reasons" for his being kept in solitary confinement. Kalmadi and two others, arrested on charges of cheating, conspiracy and corruption in the award of Games related contracts, were sent to 14 days' judicial custody by a Delhi court today.
According to a prison official, Kalmadi along with the other two accused organising committee officials —- Surjit Lal and ASV Prasad -- arrived in the prison at 6.30 pm and after the routine medical and security checks were sent to their separate cells.They were alloted separate cells unlike other high profile accused who share their cells with other inmates.
"Kalmadi has been sent to Jail No. 4. He along with other white collar criminals have been kept in a seperate ward and in single cells inside the jail. All three do not share their cell with any other inmate. This has been done for security reasons," Neeraj Kumar, DG, Tihar Prisons said.
"The jail also houses hardcore criminals. We agree that the jails are already overcrowded but safety of the prisoner inside the jail premises is our responsibility. So to prevent any untoward incident we had to allocate seperate cell to all three," he said.
Former NALCO CMD Abhay Kumar Srivastava too is lodged in the same prison.
