Supreme Court quizzes Maharashtra govt over best-five

The Supreme Court on Monday heard the state’s argument on the best-five policy for junior college admissions and quizzed the government about the basis of calculating percentages of SSC and ICSE students.

While state board counsel Harish Salve contended that there is lack of uniformity in the education sector across the country, the judges said that if the dichotomy seen in the best-five dispute could be resolved by a requisite amendment in law, it would be of great help to a large number of students.

The Bombay high court in June had quashed the best-five policy, calling it discriminatory.
