A lawyer today approached the Supreme Court pleading it to defer the Commonwealth Games to save the country from "national shame" and allow the government machinery to devote time for providing relief to flood victims.

The application, filed by advocate Ajay K Agrawal, sought a direction to the Centre to defer the Games for at least one month with an aim to save the country "from national shame".

The postponement of the Games would help the entire bureaucracy in devoting time for giving relief to flood-affected people all over the country, the plea said, adding that the time could be used in "undoing" the mess created by "Suresh Kalmadi and company".

The application also sought removal of Kalmadi from the post of the chairman of the organising committee of the Games and a CBI inquiry into the alleged irregularities.

Earlier, Agrawal had filed the PIL seeking a CBI inquiry into alleged corruption in the management of the Commonwealth Games and removal of organising committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi.
