One of the oldest supermarkets of Ahmedabad, ANPM, has finally closed down owing to rift between partners. It had been running operations successfully for more than a decade.

Located in one of the most posh areas of the city near Judges Bungalow road, ANPM was the only supermarket in the city that sold frozen non-vegetarian items. Its closure has left residents of nearby areas in a fix.

Before ANPM, Pyramid, Spencers, India Bulls, Subhiksha and other retail chains have closed down in the city.

Industry experts feel that a rift between partners could be the reason behind the closing down of the supermarket. When contacted, the store owners refused to respond.

One of the persons associated with ANPM, on condition of anonymity, revealed that the store had to be closed down as there were different partners who were now at different places.

"Partnership split has resulted in its closing down," said an ANPM official. Industry experts feel that the stores which closed down earlier were relatively new whereas ANPM was an old player. Therefore, it is highly unlikely that the store shut shop owing to unbearable market competition.

With stores closing down in the city one after another, not a healthy sign for entrepreneurship, Indranil Banerji, general manager, 10 Acres-Ahmedabad City Mall said, "The primary reason behind majority of retail stores, supermarkets and malls closing down seems to be the wrong pattern of leasing which hampers their long-term survival. In addition, margins and profitability have come down in the wake of increasing competition and most of them prefer shutting down operations rather than running into losses."

Experts feel that it is customer service that matters the most in the current competitive scenario. Customers need to be offered lucrative schemes which will bring them back to the same place.

Many homemakers and residents near ANPM were habituated to buy from the supermarket. Seema Shah, a resident of Judges Bungalow area said, "I am not comfortable with any other grocery shop. I have been shopping from ANPM for many years now. For me, it's a matter of huge concern to locate a trustworthy store now."
