Sub-inspector caught taking Rs1 lakh bribe in Gujarat

Police sub-inspector KB Jhala of Bagodara police station was allegedly caught by sleuths of Anti-Corruption Bureau while he accepting Rs1 lakh as bribe from an accused, on Tuesday. The ACB officials caught Jhala red-handed at the police station itself in Bagodara, which falls under the Ahmedabad rural police jurisdiction.

According to ACB officials, one Merubhai Koli Patel, a resident of Tarla village in Bavla taluka, approached the ACB with a complaint regarding his relative who is a sarpanch was booked in a rape case in January. Patel stated that when he was bailed out almost two months later, he along with 12 others was again booked in a rioting case with Bagodara police station in April.

"The complainant told us that PSI Jhala wanted Rs3 lakh from the accused. He had threatened that if they (accused) wanted to avoid being bashed up, police remand and cancellation of bail plea, they must give him the specified sum of money.

When the accused requested to lower the amount, the deal was struck at Rs2 lakh," said police inspector PJ Chaudhary, ACB who led the case.  Director General of Police, Chitranjan Singh, permitted acB Chaudhary to take action in Bagodara to keep the case a secret.
