Seems like the authorities responsible for the increasing bird hit cases at Sardar Vallabhbhai International Airport in the city have finally woken up.

In a recent development related to curbing the bird menace, a high-level meeting was held at the airport on Tuesday morning. At the meet, officials decided that a committee will study  how the birds happen to stray in the vicinity. They also discussed other longstanding problems such as the cropping up of meat shops in and outside the airport, dumping garbage in the vicinity, wild grasses, among others, that attract birds.

The meeting was organised by the forest and environment department along with the Airport Authority of India (AAI), Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and officers of Air Force, CISF and Army. In the meeting, DGCA joint director AK Chopra, city collector Harit Shukla, AMC commissioner IP Gautam and forest and environment department’s principal secretary SK Nanda were also present.

During the meeting, officials stressed the need to curb bird menace by understanding the behaviour of the birds. It was also decided that a study will be conducted to find the routing of the birds. The officials also observed that in the recent times, there has been a major shift in the location where birds have been straying. The local committee, assigned the task to carry out the research, comprises officials of AAI, AMC and environment department.

“A Sanyal, DGM (ATC) of AAI, suggested that the forest department should conduct a study to understand the behaviour of birds. The meat shops surrounding the airport and even the cantonment attract birds. Agreeing to the same, principal secretary SK Nanda assured that the bird specialists in his department will offer assistance for the study,” said a source.

On the other hand, municipal commissioner IP Gautam said that the DGCA officials have given an agenda to implement ideas to avoid incidents of bird hits. “The AMC will help the AAI to maintain civic amenities in chawls and slums in the surrounding areas. It will also ensure that the airport area is kept clean. This apart, solid waste management in airport periphery will be looked after,” said Gautam.
