Two major student bodies, Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (Desam) and All Tribal Students' Union of Manipur (Atsum), have appealed for calling off the boycott of classes by students.

Major social organisation Apunba Lup (AL), had called for boycott of classes till its demand that chief minister O Ibobi Singh resign on moral grounds for the July 23 alleged fake encounter that left a youth Chungkham Sanjit dead, was met.

The boycott call was supported by the All Manipur Students Union (Amsu), Manipur Students' Federation (MSF) and Kangleipak Students Association (KSA).

The Desam and Atsum, however, last evening urged that the boycott be withdrawn as it was affecting the career of lakhs of students.

Classes in educational institutions have stopped for over two months following the boycott call. Meanwhile, the All Manipur  Students Guardians' Organisation (AMSGO) has appealed to the government and students bodies to reach an understanding so that the classes in educational institutions could resume immediately.

General secretary of AMSGO, O Yaima said its representatives have been meeting top functionaries of the government including the chief minister in the past few weeks appealing to them for a solution.

He said boycott of classes would result in the loss of careers of lakhs of students in the state.
