The opposition Congress and JDS are likely to grill the BJP government on a host of issues of public import, including tardy progress of relief works in flood ravaged areas, worsened power supply situation and renewed attacks on churches in the budget session commencing tomorrow.

The government, which has already been facing the ire of farmers for its moves to acquire agricultural land across the state under the pretext of creating "land bank" for allotment to prospective investors, will certainly have a tough time in convincing the belligrent opposition.

The JDS supremo and former prime minister HD Devegowda, who has taken on the Yeddyurappa government for allegedly providing excess land to NICE company and its action of acquiring 1.71 lakh acres, has already been criss crossing parts of the state opposing land acquisition, a campaign dubbed by the chief minsiter as "inciting of farmers" against the government.

The campaign by Gowda and his son former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy has evoked a good response and is a cause for worry for the 21-month-old maiden saffron party government.

Repeated assurances from Yeddyurappa that his government was not acquiring vast tracts of land has failed to convince farmers, who have been up in arms and are supporting Gowda.

The renewed attack on churches in parts of Karnataka has added to the ruling party's cup of woes, which has been characterising them as "an attempt to taint its image".

Opposition parties will certainly train their guns on the BJP government for its "failure" to maintain law and order. The proposed legislation to ban cow slaughter will be the other issue to generate much debate during the session.

Opposition Congress leader in the Assembly Siddramaiah, who has the credit of presenting seven budgets, has kept his guns ready to attack the government on the financial situation, which he has described as being "in a shambles."

Yeddyurappa, who holds the finance portfolio, has not replied to any of this criticism, but has been maintaining that "revenue collections are good".

Governor HR Bhardwaj, who has also hit out at the government on various issues,  including on protection to minorities and rehabilitation to flood affected, will deliver his address to the joint sitting on the opening day. Yeddyurappa will present his third successive budget on March 5.
