Cutting across party lines, 48 MPs on Wednesday placed before chief minister Ashok Chavan 24 mega projects which need to be pursued by the Centre. It was found that majority of the projects related to power, agriculture, public sector units (PSUs), pradhanmantri sadak yogna in the state are pending with the union cabinet ministers from Maharashtra. The MPs wondered why, despite eight cabinet ministers holding important portfolios, their demands were going unheard.

“Biggest concerns are the power and agriculture crises. Sushil Kumar Shinde holds the power ministry and agriculture is headed by Sharad Pawar. Issues related to public sector units are under heavy industries minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. Where are we going to lodge complaints if ministers overlook the demands,” said a Congress MP.

BJP MP Gopinath Munde said that secondary treatment has been meted to state in the railway budget. He urged Pawar and Deshmukh to pursue the issue with the UPA government. The MPs representing Mumbai pointed at the lack of representation of the city in the railway budget.

From matters related to seeking more revenue for state to overburdening of infrastructure because of migrants were discussed at length in the meeting. Several members from rural Maharashtra highlighted the plight of the farmers and shortage of fertilisers.

“All the MPs should come together to pursue the development projects with the Centre unanimously,” the chief minister said. It was felt that the state which has always got step-motherly treatment can make a difference in terms of wresting more revenue from the planning commission if they make common cause for the overall welfare of Maharashtra.
