Have students in Gujarat become honest, or are they stopped cheating in the exams — or become smart enough not to be caught cheating?

A check of the total number of cheating cases registered in Std X exam conducted by the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB), shows a figure of 21 cheating cases across Gujarat. The figure is the lowest in cheating cases registered in the Std X exams in the last three years.

In 2011, the GSHSEB had registered 26 cheating cases in the Std X board exams and 186 cases in 2010. The buzz in the school corridor is that this might be because of liberal checking by the local and flying squad in the inspection of the examination centres.

Incidentally, Ahmedabad registered only two cheating cases - one in Vastral and Amraiwadi each.  Unlike earlier when students were caught cheating in subjects like Mathematics and Science and Technology, highest number of cheating cases are registered in language papers. Data provided by the GSHSEB about cheating cases show that majority of the students, seven, were caught cheating in English language papers. Five students were caught cheating in Gujarati language and Science and Technology.

“Isn’t it a good thing that number of cheating cases has gone down?” a senior official in GSHSEB said with a sarcastic laugh. When asked for the reason for reduction in number of cheating cases this year, he said,” It could be because students have become more honest,” he stated while continuing to laugh.

RR Varsani, chairman, GSHSEB, however has a different take on the change. “This year the papers were so easy that not many students needed to cheat. All the questions were from textbooks and that could be one of the reasons for less cheating cases,” he said.

Mathematics saw majority of absent students as of the total registered, 8,76,899 students, around 8,63,022 remained present in the exam.

This brings the number of absent students to 13,877. Similarly, of 8,18,533 students, around 8,04,664 students remained present, the figure brings number of absent students in the subject to 13,869.

Social science saw 12,427 students absent from the total of 8,16,797 students registered with the board and the Gujarati paper had 11,373 absent students from a total of 7,52,627 students registered for it.
