Upset by the Centre’s classification of poor, a youth of remote J&K village has sent a demand draft of Rs26 each to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and deputy chairman of planning commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia with an appeal to spend a day with this meagre amount.

Sardar Darvinder Singh, 34, of Bhagote village in Ramban district of Jammu has also dispatched a letter to the trio rejecting the Planning Commission’s argument and figure of Rs32 in urban areas and Rs26 in villages.

“This is an insult to the crores of poor of the country. On one side, inflation is so high and essential commodities are going out of reach of the ordinary man and on the other the planning commission is making such illogical, unjustifiable and unrealistic claims that are far away from facts,” he said.

Singh has challenged the prime minister, finance minister and deputy chairman of the planning commission to prove that a poor man can survive on Rs32 in urban areas and Rs26 in the rural areas.

“I am enclosing three demand drafts of Rs26 each in favour of the prime minister, finance minister and deputy chairman planning commission so that you all kindly spend a day with this amount and let us (every poor Indian) know that how with this meagre amount one can even survive, forget a healthy diet and education,” he said.

Singh, owning a self employment unit, has invited the leaders to his village to see the sufferings of the people.

“I belong to a remote village of the J&K where, everyday I have to meet with the ground realities. And being a self witness and victim of price hike, I reject this argument and figure of Rs26 a day,” he said.

In a passionate appeal, Singh has urged the PM to withdraw the affidavit about the below poverty population and classification of poor, submitted in the Supreme Court.
