Two young children who were playing near a busy road in Sabarmati area were run over by a speeding car on Tuesday afternoon. A white Hyundai Verna car hit a 10-year-old boy near Visat petrol pump, and then mowed down a 4-year- old boy barely any distance away as he tried to evade the public that was out to catch him.

According to Chandkheda police, eyewitnesses saw only the first line of car's registration, which read GJ-18. Apart from the number, text reading 'Adarsh' or 'Adesh' was also written on the back of the car.

At 4:15 pm, the car coming from IIT-Gandhinagar hit Ankit Yadav (10) near Visat petrol pump. The severity of the impact was such that the class IV student was tossed 30 feet into the air and then died on the spot, an eyewitness said.

The car driver then tried to zoom away, as other commuters and bystanders wanted to catch him. In a bid to escape, the car then hit a Manish Sathi (4) at a short distance from the first mishap place. The toddler too succumbed to his injuries on the spot. The car driver was then chased by other commuters, but he managed to make away.

Both Ankit and Manish were residents of a locality close to Ganesh Nursery near the main road of Sabarmati area. Ankit was the eldest of Yadav's three sons, while Manish had a brother and a sister. The shocked family members rushed their injured kids to the hospital, but were declared brought dead. According to Ankit's father, Surendra Yadav, the class IV student had exams going on, and had returned home at 11:30 am. "He studied at Gyanoday School and was very happy to come home early after his exam,” said Surendra, a telephone operator at Karnavati club.
