The special investigation team (SIT) would wait for few more days for a response from chief minister Narendra Modi to appear before it in connection with the 2002 Gujarat riots.

SIT chief RK Raghavan today said that there was so far no response from Modi or his office with regard to the summons.

Modi was asked to appear before the Supreme Court- appointed SIT on March 21 but failed to appear before the agency yesterday.

The panel will wait for the response from Modi with regard to the summons issued by them, SIT sources said.

Meanwhile, no official in the chief minister's office was available for comment.

Modi was summoned by the SIT with regard to a complaint filed by Zakia Jaffery wife of former MP Eshan Jaffrey who was killed along with 69 others during the 2002 Gulburg society riots.

Zakia in her complaint had alleged that Modi and 62 others, including his cabinet colleagues, police officials and senior bureaucrats aided and abetted the riots which left over 1,000 people dead across the state.

However, sources in the government said that Modi was seeking legal help for which senior party leader and BJP MP in the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat Arun Jaitley, who is a senior lawyer of the Supreme Court, has arrived in the city.

BJP sources claimed that Jaitley would be looking into the summons issued to Modi and give his legal opinion on what
steps should be taken.

Yesterday, when Modi was summoned, SIT office was kept open during the office hours from 1030 hrs to 1810 hrs.

In connection with Zakia's complaint, SIT has already recorded statements of a number of persons named in her complaint which include, former minister of state for home Gordhan Zadafia, BJP leader I K Jadeja, former BJP MLA from Lunawada Kalu Malivad and sitting MLA from Mehsana Anil Patel, former IPS officer R B Sreekumar, social activist Teesta Setalvad, IG Shivanand Jha, some other senior police officers and political leaders.
