A special court today admitted the petitions seeking 'special class' prisoner status for former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhan Reddy and Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) Managing Director B V Srinivas Reddy, who were arrested in connection with the alleged illegal mining case.

Allowing the pleas, the special CBI court made the initial recommendation for the classification of the petitioners (Reddys) as special class prisoners as provided under rule 730 to the Hyderabad District Collector for his review.

The court will now inform through a letter to Hyderabad District Collector Natarajan Gulzar on its order.

Janardhan Reddy, who owns OMC, was arrested along with his brother-in-law Srinivas Reddy from Bellary in Karnataka by the CBI probing into alleged illegal mining and irregularities in allotment of mining leases to OMC.

The duo were remanded in judicial custody and are currently lodged as ordinary inmates (ordinary class undertrial prisoner) at Chanchalguda central prison here since September 5.

Janardhan Reddy had earlier sought direction to the jail authorities to provide special class facilities stating that he was a legislator and a former minister.

The CBI, however, opposed the special category status saying 'Janardhan Reddy was only an SSLC pass and son of a police constable and did not enjoy higher social status before becoming a legislator'.

Reddy through his counsel had earlier sought the special status citing the case of Satyam founder B Ramalinga Raju.

Raju was recently lodged at Chanchalguda jail in connection with the multi-crore accounting fraud in the Satyam Computers before granted bail by the Supreme Court.
