Uttar Pradesh BJP's new chief Laxmi Kant Bajpai on Monday accused the Samajwadi Party government in the state of doing nothing except ordering bulk transfers in its one-month rule.

"The government has completed a month in office and during this period it has done nothing except bulk transfers...it is overlooking the interests of the people," Bajpai said at a function held at the BJP office here to welcome him as the new party chief.

Claiming that there has been a spurt in crime in Kannauj, the parliamentary constituency of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, he said it is an index of the worsening law and order situation in the state.

"If serious crimes are taking place in CM's constituency then what will be the situation of the rest of the state," he said.

Bajpai said he was not of the opinion that victory or defeat should result in disappointment.

"BJP was left to two MPs in Parliament and after that it ran the government under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee during NDA regime," he said.

The state president said the political ground in UP was fertile for the party as old actions of SP and main opposition BSP would give BJP ample chance.

He asked the party workers to remain dedicated to the policies of the party, unite and look for opportunities for struggle.

"You all struggle for the cause of the people and I assure you that the state leaders will lead it and take it to its conclusion," he said.

He alleged that while previous BSP government was not willing to conduct local body polls, the SP regime was following in its footsteps.

"The reason is that neither of the parties has political base in urban areas," he said and demanded early election to the local bodies.
