The Southern Railway has reduced the running time of 44 different trains scheduled under Palakkad division including the Yeshwanthpur (Bangalore) Kannur Express (Via Mangalore) out of this 35 trains run through Karnataka either on Konkan Railway or Southern railway lines. The Kannur-Yeshwanthpur Express (No.16528) will arrive in both terminal stations 35 minutes earlier, but in other trains the reduction of running time was to from 5 minutes to 50 minutes the largest spectrum announced in the recent years.

This reduction of running time has been seen as a boon to the railway travellers in Karnataka. However the list of trains included in the new running schedule does not include the most popular train 12620 Mangalore Central Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express between Mangalore and Mumbai which has come in for flak from the railway user bodies.

The new railway time-table effective from July 1, for 2010-12 for the entire railway network of India (in fact one of the biggest network in the world) indicates that many trains in all divisions of Indian Railways have been speeded up. But Palakkad division has the largest number with 44 trains that have been speeded up.

“There was a need for speeding up several trains to facilitate passenger comfort, achieving greater connectivity to other trains and improving overall efficiency and economy of each trip. The two-month survey carried out by the Railways in this division in October-November 2010 had indicated that all these 44 trains had much more potential if their running time were reduced,” divisional railway manager SK Raina told DNA.

The people travelling between Kannur and Yeshwanthpur will arrive in Yeshwanthpur 35 minutes earlier in Yeshwanthpur railway station in Bangalore which will help the overnight travellers to reach their homes earlier. Its pairing train (Yeshwanthpur-Kannur Express No. 16527) will reach Kannur 50 minutes earlier)

When asked why the Mangalore Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express (No.12620) was not speeded up, Raina told this train gets to travel only 25 kilometers in the jurisdiction of Southern railway and to some distance it travels through the Central Railway and most of its run was in Konkan Railway line, it was a very tedious process speed up that train but we are trying to do it,” Raina told.

According PV Mohan a railway reforms activist the 12620 Mangalore Central-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus – Matsyagandha Express can be speeded up by not less than 90 minutes as it is running two hours slower than its installed capacity.
