South India’s First Reverse Shoulder Surgery was performed on a 72 year-old patient by renowned Orthopaedic surgeon Dr Jacob Varghese at a private hospital here.

The surgery, conducted at Lakeshare hospital here, successfully corrected a shoulder that suffered irreparable rotator cuff tear and was previously operated with a failed surface surgery, a Hospital press release said.

This was done by replacing the joint with the help of Delta reverse shoulder on the patient.

Primary shoulder prosthesis is effective in treating various types of arthritis, but it is not equipped to meet complex situations of damaged rotator cuff muscles that surround shoulder areas. This plays an important role in hand movement and maintains the alignment of the shoulder joints.

In such cases, the deltoid muscle’s efficiency is optimised using a reverse shoulder replacement to make-up for the cuff muscles functioning.

Reverse Shoulder Surgery has very recently entered India. This can be attributed to many reasons like increased diagnosis of such cases besides rising confidence and changes in perceptions among  people towards such surgeries.

Dr Varghese, director, Lakeshore Orthopedic Centre& Chief
of Division of Joint Replacement & Sports Injuries, said nearly 50 cases of rotator cuff arthropathy have been reported in India last year,of which 10 have sought treatment overseas, increasing the treatment cost by over 50%'.

The progress of medical advances in India has opened up new avenues both in terms of treating patients as well as providing easy access to world-class healthcare.

Those suffering from pseudoparalysis and severe instability due to previous arthritis surgery failures and also complex fracture cases will usually require this surgery, he said.

The surgery provides improved function and pain relief by replacing the worn out joint surfaces with an artificial metal
and plastic joint. This is done by reversing the shoulder ball and socket, enabling the deltoid muscle to lift the arm up overhead, and compensate for the torn rotator cuff.
