Former India captain Sourav Ganguly's ambitious school project in Salt Lake has run into trouble with construction work coming to a halt following opposition from local residents.

The construction of Ganguly's Wissen International School was on in full swing when residents, under the aegis of CA Block Citizen's Association, opposed it saying they did not want another school to come up in the locality as two schools were already there.

"Another school will add to traffic jams and pollution which will add to the misery of the residents and the area will become accident-prone," said a member of the association who has already talked to CPI(M) councillor of Ward No.1 of Bidhan Nagar Municipality, Ila Roy.

Roy, however, said, "I will not hinder an educational project, but at the same time, I am a people's leader so I've to listen to their grievances."

There has been no work on the site for the last 14 days.

Ganguly, who already has a cricket academy in Salt Lake, however, is keen to go ahead with the project.

The Bengal ace met local residents on Wednesday and discussed the situation with chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Thursday.

"We will talk to the other two schools about congestion and try to address residents' objections. The school building will definitely come up and the problems will also be sorted out," Ganguly said.

His uncle Sanjoy Chatterjee, said, "Construction will go on. We are trying to solve the problem."

State Urban Development minister Ashok Bhattacharjee backed Ganguly's project and said, "The only purpose there is to build a school."

The residents also alleged the masterplan for the 63-cottah plot given to Ganguly by the urban development minister had been tampered with.

"Originally, that plot was meant for a college, but it has been changed and given for a school," the residents alleged.
