Monsoon has gone but the threat of the vector-borne disease dengue is still looming large over the city. For 16 more cases of this deadly disease have been confirmed and registered with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) health department.

The high rate of prevalence of the female mosquito Aedes has seen a rise in the last one month and is likely to remain high till the middle of November.

With 16 more cases of dengue confirmed on Saturday, total number of dengue cases in the city has reached 88, said AMC health department officials. The city has registered around 150 cases of dengue in September. Of these, 95 cases were admitted to AMC-managed hospitals and 55 to private ones.

According to the government report, 337 cases of dengue were registered in Ahmedabad from January to September 25. The same was not the case with other cities, which reveals that the situation in Ahmedabad was very critical. The number of cases of vector-borne diseases was 44 in Surat, 11 in Baroda, 17 in Rajkot, 8 in Bhavnagar and 3 in Jamnagar. This indicates the huge increase in number of dengue cases.

The rate of density of the Aedes mosquito decreases in cold weather, so the mosquito menace is likely to continue for one more month, till winter sets, said sources in the health department. They added that as the temperature at night touches 20 degree Celsius, mosquito breeding reduces. This will give citizens much-needed relief.

When contacted, AMC medical officer Suhar Kulkarni said, “Our data is not based on single-day information. Several samples, in the past few days, sent to the laboratory for testing were received collectively on Tuesday. There is nothing to be scared of but precautions, obviously, need to be taken.” Meanwhile, 17 more cases of malaria and 22 of plasmodium falciparum were registered in the city on Saturday.
