A BJP member, who showed swine-flu like symptoms, was admitted to the isolation ward of New Civil Hospital on Monday, even though the ward was full. Hospital authorities were reportedly forced to admit the patient because of calls made from Gandhinagar and CM's Office. While common suspected swine flu patients were turned away, this patient was given a special treatment.

According to information, Ashwin Jasani, 40, a resident of Hirabaug in Varachha, was detected with symptoms similar to swine flu in a medical check-up at New Civil Hospital on Monday. As no bed was vacant in the hospital's isolation ward, doctors asked Jasani to take treatment in some other hospital. But they had to backtrack after some time due to Jasani's political contacts.

Sources said that calls were made allegedly from Gandhinagar to New Civil Hospital superintendent, H K Wadhel, to admit Jasani in isolation ward at any cost. Within half an hour, Jasani was admitted to the  ward. Special arrangement was made in the ward to accommodate Jasani.

"State health minister Jaynarayan Vyas reportedly spoke to Wadhel, while it is learnt that there was a  call from Chief Minister's Office also, to admit Jasani. Wadhel personally reviewed all arrangements made for the patient and even directed doctors on duty to take care of him (Jasani)," a doctor at the isolation ward of the hospital, said, requesting anonymity.

He added that before Jasani, more than 10 patients having symptoms similar to swine flu were referred to other hospitals, as the ward was full. Some patients were even more serious than Jasani, but had to be let off after giving primary treatment.

Sources said that Jasani is a BJP party worker for the last 15 years and had campaigned for the party in every election. He has good relations with almost all top leaders in the state, which resulted in such a good treatment.

There was no death in the city due to swine flu on Monday, but two suspected patients were traced out in a medical check-up at the New Civil Hospital. One suspected patient was identified at SMIMER hospital.
