Yet another software engineer from Andhra Pradesh has been killed abroad, this time in Johannesburg, South Africa. Unidentified assailants shot B Kiran, 28, of Arepally village near Warangal, when he was returning from work, on Thursday with his colleague Sridhar, a software professional from Rajahmundry.

Sridhar too was attacked but suffered minor injuries. Three bullets pierced Kiran in the chest, stomach and thigh. He was admitted to a government hospital in Johannesburg where he was said to be out of danger. But he died on Tuesday morning. The assailants took away a laptop from Kiran.

“We are not sure if it was a racist attack or for the purpose of stealing. Since nothing was taken away from Kiran except the laptop, it looks more like a racist attack,” Kiran’s brother Ganesh said.

However, the family is in a state of shock and does not want to get into the racism debate. They just want Kiran’s body back. “We thought of going to South Africa to bring Kiran back. If the government promises us Kiran’s body will be brought back, we will not go. Otherwise, we will go,” said Ganesh.

His father, B Shankaraiah, is a farmer holding seven acres in drought-prone Warangal. He wanted to get Kiran back from Johannesburg for treatment. He had despatched his elder son Ganesh to get himself a passport for the purpose. Ganesh had just reached the passport office in Hyderabad when he heard Kiran had died.

Kiran went to Johannesburg in search of a job two years ago. He had returned in April after completing a project there and stayed till June 27. “He went back only recently. Less than 10 days later, he was shot. We were told he was recovering,” Ganesh said.
The state government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs5 lakh to Kiran’s family.
