Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) officials traced 15 illegal water connections from Shiv-Shankar society at Pandesara of Udhna zone in yet another operation on Thursday. This is second time when illegal water connections have been traced in a month from the same zone.

Civic authorities fined all units drawing water from the pipeline. According to information, officials of Udhna zone received a complaint about illegal water connections which are joined into main water supply pipeline at Shiv-Shankar society at Bamroli in Pandesara.

Civic officials reached the spot and dug up the area. They were surprised to find 15 illegal water connections connected to the pipeline. All connections measured 0.5 -1.5 inches in diameter and were connected directly to the pipeline. Civic officials disconnected the illegal connections and issued notices to all offenders.

Sources said that offenders have been fined between Rs40,000-50,000. They have been asked to deposit fine or face action. “We had been receiving complaints of low pressure in water from people regularly. We raided the area and disconnected all illegal connections," said KS Desai, executive engineer of SMC. We will initiate more action as we receive information and will continue to find out such illegal connections," Desai added.

Earlier 14 illegal water connections were traced out from Jalaram Industrial estate in Pandesara. "These illegal connections are going on for a long time, but SMC never came to know about it. Officials in the zone give a deaf ear to complaints from citizens. Many such illegal connections still exist in the zone," said a top civic official in Udhna zone requesting anonymity.
