As a part of a campaign to find unregistered and new properties, the assessment department of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has been conducting a survey in all zones of the city over the last few weeks. The operation is in the last stage and all types of properties.

The move is aimed at covering all properties under the purview of the property tax laws. The tax assessment department of SMC has formed separate teams for each zone. The teams inspect all the premises to check if any additions or alterations have been made in the buildings.

According to records, 12,800 properties are registered with the SMC, of which 8,300 are residential. The rest include commercial properties, institutions, banks and others. Civic officials expect property tax income of around Rs280 crore in the current fiscal.
“Properties registered have to be revised every four years. But to be more precise, the SMC conducts surveys each year,” Rohit Chaudhry, a civic tax assessment official, said.
