SM Krishna to attend ASEM nations foreign ministers meet in Hungary

External affairs minister SM Krishna will attend a two-day meeting of Asia–Europe Meeting (ASEM) foreign ministers here that would see the representatives from Europe and Asia discuss terrorism, piracy, climate change and the developments in the Arab world.

Also on the table will be issues like reform of the United Nations and of the international financial institutions besides ongoing efforts in Europe and Asia to overcome the consequences of the economic and financial crisis.

Krishna will also hold bilateral meetings with some of his counterparts on the sidelines of the 10th ASEM foreign ministers' meeting, said the ministry of external affairs.

"Non-traditional security threats such as terrorism, piracy, food and energy security, climate change, disaster relief and management, illegal migration, infectious diseases would also figure prominently in deliberations," said a statement.

It said ministers would also hold talks on regional and international issues of common interest, including developments in Europe, Asia, Middle-East and the Arab world.

The representatives of the 46 member nations will also exchange views on matters relating to economic governance and reform of the international financial system.

"A separate plenary session will be devoted to global issues such as UN Reforms, sustainable development, environment protection, non-proliferation and disarmament, G-8, G-20 etc," it said.

The grouping that was constituted in 1996 comprises countries that represent over half of the global population and account for more than half of the global GDP. India has been participating in ASEM meetings since 2007.
