After getting civic infrastructure projects worth Rs 2840 core for Ahmedabad under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is readying plans for more such projects.

AMC officials said that now the focus is to get basic civic infrastructure projects for newly merged areas in the AMC limit so as to make the city a ‘Slum Free Ahmedabad’. It also aims to relieve traffic congestion in the city.

The task of readying project proposals would be put on the fast track after the union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee declared a whopping 87% increase in JNNURM funds.

Talking to DNA deputy municipal commissioner for JNNURM projects Utpal Padia said that areas merged under the AMC limit known as New West Zone would be of prime interest for new projects under the JNNURM scheme.

“Some of the areas in newly merged areas do not even have a water supply network. The project for sewer lines has been sanctioned. We are preparing a proposal to be send to the state and central government to get water supply network projects,” said Padia.

Apart from the newly merged areas, the main focus is also on making Ahmedabad a slum free city with the help of funds from the state and central government. “A plan is also afoot to upgrade slum areas. Either we would give a facelift to the slums with better civic amenities or shift slum residents to houses under urban poor housing scheme,” said Padia. “Giving additional FSI in such areas is also under consideration,” said Padia.

The AMC is also planning additional flyovers at many places across the city to divert traffic from choked roads.   After announcement of increase in JNNURM funds, the AMC is also hopeful that two of their projects- Bhadra Fort Restoration Project and Slum Upgradation projects would also get a quick nod from the Centre.
