At least six part-time teachers were injured today in alleged police baton charge when they were demonstrating in front of Uttar Pradesh Assembly demanding regularisation of their service.

Scores of shiksha mitras or part-time teachers were holding a protest demonstration on Teachers' Day to press for regularisation of their service and hike in honorarium.

"Police resorted to baton charge when we were demonstrating for the implementation of a written agreement which was reached between us and the state government in February last year and were ready for a dialogue with authorities," vice president of UP Shiksha Mitra Association Pravin Srivasatava said. He claimed that 35 teachers were injured in the incident.

Meanwhile, police said they had to use mild force to disperse the crowd gathered on the busy Vidhan Sabha Marg as it was obstructing vehicular traffic. The demonstrators have also started pelting stones on vehicles and damaged a bus, they said, adding the situation is now under control.
