'The reactionary forces comprising Congress, Trinamool Congress, corporate media, Maoists, non-government organisations and the right wing have launched a concerted attack to politically isolate, marginalise and weaken the Left,' said Yechury.
Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] politburo member Sitaram Yechury has called upon the Left forces to defeat the attacks by "reactionary forces" and revitalise the Left in the country.
"The reactionary forces comprising Congress, Trinamool Congress, corporate media, Maoists, non-government organisations and the right wing have launched a concerted attack to politically isolate, marginalise and weaken the Left.
"We have to not only withstand those attacks but also defeat them as there is no other force that can fight the economic policies that are over-burdening the people in many ways," Sitaram Yechury said while addressing the extended meeting of the CPM Andhra Pradesh committee in Hyderabad today.
Defeating the attempts of the reactionary forces was the big challenge facing the Left in general and the Communist Party of India (Maoist) [CPM] in particular, he said.
Yechury said Rs1.20 lakh crore was being collected by the Centre as tax on petroleum products.
"The abnormal rise in prices of petroleum products is because of the high taxes. This has in turn resulted in escalation of prices of essential commodities by 20% on an average in the last one year, making life miserable for the common man," he added.
It was only the Left that could fight the anti-people policies and exert pressure on the government, the CPM politburo member said and exhorted party workers to continue to fight for the people's cause.
CPM politburo member and state secretary BV Raghavulu lashed out at the state government for totally neglecting all sections of the society, particularly the farmers, during the times of distress.
"Governance has collapsed in the state and the people are left in the lurch as the ruling Congress is busy with its infighting," Raghavulu said.
Referring to the statehood issue, he said there was no hope the Congress would come up with a solution even after the Srikrishna committee submitted its report to the Centre by December 31.
"The statehood issue has become a major impediment for the progress of the state," Raghavulu said. CPM state secretariat member Y Venkateswara Rao, former MP P Madhu and other senior leaders attended the meeting.
