Members of Democratic Students Organisation (DSO) carried out a black flag demonstration on Monday to protest the corrupt practices in the Gujarat University (GU). But the silent protest turned violent when the police came out of nowhere and arrested the protesters. Protesters alleged that they were manhandled by the cops.

Speaking to DNA, one of the protesters Sachin Shah said their campaign has been going on since last week. "We were only demonstrating near the GU when the police arrived and told us that we were blocking the road. Since we were not blocking the road an argument ensued and the cops turned violent."

Gujarat secretary of DSO said the male officers manhandled the female protesters despite the fact that female cops were present.
In all 15 students had joined the demonstration and the police arrested seven, of which two were females. They were later allowed to go at 6 in the evening.

Another female member of DSO Nehal Chawda said they were quietly standing with banners in their hands when the police came and said that they had not taken prior permission.
