The Ahmedabad crime branch on Wednesday sought police remand for Shiva Solanki who was arrested a day earlier in connection with the murder of the RTI activist, Amit Jethava.

The police said they needed his custody to investigate the possible involvement of other people in the murder. After hearing the submissions of the crime branch, the court remanded Shiva in police custody till September 20.

Sources in the police said the case could prove critical for many people as the city crime branch was also investigating to find out who all had benefited from Jethava's death.

While seeking Shiva's custody on police remand, the crime branch said that he is one of the key conspirators in the case. The meeting in which the conspiracy to kill Jethava was hatched, had taken place in Shiva's office, the police said.

The crime branch also said that Shiva had provided financial assistance for the entire conspiracy. The assistance included funds for Bahadur Vadher, a police constable who was assigned the task of finding a man to carry out the murder, as well as money for the legwork involved, the police said.

The crime branch also said that there was a possibility that Shiva had met the other accused and that he had knowledge of the whereabouts of the absconding accused in the case. Shiva Solanki, 40, was arrested from Rajkot airport on his return from Mumbai.

His name had reportedly cropped up during the interrogation of the constable, Bahadur Vadher, who was the first to be arrested in the case.
