Facing flak from various quarters regarding preparations for the Commonwealth Games, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit today asked students and teachers in the national capital in promoting the event.

Dikshit said that only the "spirit of the games" mattered and exhorted teachers and students to show the same.

"People could complain about poor condition at Games venues and stadia and blame various organisations for it but the sporting spirit, the welcoming spirit, the smiling spirit, the dignified spirit and the cultured spirit were equally important," she said, addressing the State Award winning teachers on Teacher's Day in New Delhi.

The chief minister said she wants to see the students and teachers of the city "come together and promote the Games."

The Games has been at the centre of a controversy after allegations of corruption erupted and reports of delays in preparation for the Games.

The Delhi government and the organising committee are under attack from various quarters for preparation of the Games.

Praising the education system in Delhi, Dikshit urged people to not just be content with the present system but look at the future of education system in the country and to introduce more "changes" to improve it.

"We have to learn and not only think of book education. Books are important because they teach us so much, they teach us about the world, they teach us about people, they teach us about communities, about religions and we are taught to respect it."

The chief minister also laid emphasis teachers playing a key role in "sensitising" students and to help them live in a society.

"I've discussed with the Education Board that we need to incorporate in our curriculum, apart from teaching them how to read and write, emphasis on extra-curriculars, sports and other activities. This should be taken as a challenge," she said.

She urged teachers "to produce more rounded personalities," through their teaching and by setting examples by themselves.
