As many as 400 sex workers prowl posh localities in the city for fresh business.
Don’t be surprised if you are told there is a brothel running in your neighbourhood. As many as 400 sex workers in the city are operating underground and are on a constant look out for posh localities to carry on their flesh trade, which was stalled after some 80 beauty parlours, from where they operated, were raided and closed down.
“Each of these beauty parlours provided employment to around three-four sex workers,” Gaurang Jani, a sociologist, told DNA. Police raids have forced many such parlours to close down and as a result most of these sex workers have started shifting to other areas.
If a source in the police is to be believed, it is mostly the posh localities of Vastrapur, Ghatlodia, Satellite, parts of SG Highway and Navrangpura that are luring sex workers to operate underground.
In the last few months, the Ahmedabad crime branch raided many beauty parlours cum brothels operating in the city. “Of some 100 such brothels, around 80 are not operating now. Which means that there are around 350 unemployed sex workers in the city,” said Jani.
“The demand is everywhere, so why not operate in areas where we can earn more,” a sex worker on the condition of anonymity told DNA.
She further said that after the recent raids on beauty parlours, sex workers have started operating surreptitiously. Most have assumed a new identity to avoid being caught in the new area.
“Even in posh localities, the customers we receive belong to the same strata of society as the ones who visited us in beauty parlours,” said another sex worker.
The police, however, said that the sex workers keep shifting their area of operation on the basis of the demand. “A sex worker operates in a posh locality for two main reasons, demand and the plan to expand their domain to new areas,” Usha Rada, deputy superintendent of police, detection of crime branch, told DNA.
