Asking Atomic Energy Commission chairman S Bannerjee to set up a research centre in Haryana, chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda today assured him of the state's assistance in this regard.

At the inaugural function of a two-day conference organised to commemorate birth centenary year of Dr Homi Jehangir Bhabha, the father of India's nuclear programme, Hooda told Bannerjee and former AEC chairman Anil Kakodkar that such a centre could boost research in the areas of water technology, nuclear medicine, biotechnology and solar energy.

Hooda also announced to name the proposed 2800 MW nuclear power plant at Kumharia after Bhabha, saying "as we are celebrating his birth centenary, I would like to name this atomic project after the great scientist", according to an official release.

Hooda congratulated both Banerjee and Kakodkar for the nuclear deal with the US and described them as the two pillars of India's current nuclear programme.

The agreement has opened up a host of opportunities for the application of nuclear science for multi-dimensional growth of our country and betterment of human life, he said.
