She could have been one of numerous victims of chain-snatching in the city, but this elderly woman chose to give the rogues a fitting reply. In a rather courageous move, 56-year-old Usha Jani put up a fight against two chain-snatchers on a bike, and had them caught.
A resident of Shantivan Society in Geratpur, Jani was on her way home on National Highway number 7 on Sunday, with her son. The two were on a bike. Between 8.30 and 8.45, two men on a bike inched closer to them, and the pillion rider tried to snatch Jani's gold chain. However, unlike most other cases, the men were unable to make away with the loot. Jani bravely held on to the chain-snatchers' bike, refusing to let go of them. Soon, they were on the ground, and Jani started screaming for help .
"As the lady shouted for help, a group of people circled them and caught the two who was trying to run away. In the meanwhile, a police patrolling squad reached the spot and caught them," said a police source. Jani lodged a complaint with the Ramol police. The chain-snatchers were identified as one Hitesh Gaud, a resident of Hatkeshwar, and one Hitesh Parmar, a resident of Amraiwadi. Both are 22 years old, said the police.
The police said neither of the accused have a criminal record in chain-snatching cases, but Hitesh Gaud had been caught under IPC-324 in Ramol.
