A senior citizen allegedly committed suicide by setting himself ablaze in central Delhi this afternoon, apparently depressed over the death of his brother.

The incident was reported from Anand Parbat and the victim has been identified as Pratap Srivastava, 62, who suffered 98% burn injuries, a senior police official said.

Srivastava, a bachelor who was staying with his nephew, was depressed after his elder brother passed away recently. He had come to Anand Parbat recently from Sultanpur.

He allegedly set himself on fire after pouring kerosene on himself. The incident came to light when neighbours detected smoke coming out from his first floor room and alerted the nephew.

They broke open the door of the room and found Srivastava lying on the bed.

Police rushed him to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

Police have ruled out any foul play. The post-mortem will be conducted tomorrow.
