Security strengthened in Delhi after terror alert

'The home ministry has issued a red alert for the city. We are taking all precautionary steps. We have deployed policemen on streets. There is nothing to panic, a police official said.

With the government declaring an alert in the capital following the Pune terror attacks, Delhi police today strengthened the security apparatus across the city by deploying Quick Reaction Teams and anti-riot vehicles.

Policemen were deployed in a large number in crowded places like markets, malls and cinema halls besides vital installations like the Indira Gandhi International Airport, railway stations, inter-state bus terminals and metro stations.

"The home ministry has issued a red alert for the city. We are taking all precautionary steps. We have deployed policemen on streets. There is nothing to panic," a senior police official said.

QRTs and anti-riot vehicles have been stationed at strategic locations in the city while random checking of vehicles are being undertaken to ensure that no untoward incident takes place.

The home ministry has issued an alert for Delhi, Indore and Kanpur besides sending a general advisory to all states to be on alert in the wake of last night's explosion in a German bakery in Pune that left nine dead and 57 injured.

Security agencies also conducted a mock drill at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, which will host the World Cup Hockey, in the morning to check the security preparedness of various agencies in the event of any incident like a bomb blast.
