With the preparatory and acclimatisation phase over, West Bengal is all set for the second and final phase of “Operation Lalgarh,” technically christened “Operation Black Soil”.

Although top police officials coordinating the operations are tight-lipped over the exact plan and its timing, sources in the state police said that in all probability, Operation Black Soil will start at dawn on Friday. Sources said that unlike the first phase, which was essentially a mono-stream (a single line of attack) action, the second phase will be multi-stream to cordon off and deactivate the buffer-defence strength of the Maoist guerrilla garrison in Lalgarh.

As per the initial plan, a parallel three-way attack has been chalked out under which the combined forces of the state armed police and central paramilitary forces will be divided into three groups to conduct a three-way simultaneous attack from three corridors.

“The attack of the combined forces will be more forceful this time since an additional 10 companies of central paramilitary forces (around 1000 men) have already joined us,” a senior police official deputed in the region said. The initial part of the operation will be mainly conducted by these three teams of combined forces, who will simultaneously conduct three assignments — resisting sudden and surprise Maoist attacks, total sanitisation of captured areas and, most importantly, cutting off the core Maoist guerrilla force’s link with its buffer force.

IG (administration) Zulfiquar Hasan will be overall in-charge of the co-ordination. His co-coordinators include DIG (Midnapore Range) Parveen Kumar and DIG (operations) Siddhinath Gupta.

A team of police SPs and additional SPs will move with the three teams during the operations. Once the forces cordon off the core area, the specialised Combat Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA)  will conduct guerrilla-style “hit & run” attacks to disperse the core Maoist team.
