A senior IPS officer in charge of security for next year’s Commonwealth Games is being tried by the enforcement directorate (ED) for alleged foreign exchange violations.

JK Sharma, a joint commissioner of police, was unable to explain the thousands of US dollars found at his official residence by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) during a raid. He was chargesheeted by the investigating agency.

When the ED asked Sharma and his wife, a co-accused, to say where they got the dollars, and how they funded their trips to Australia and the United States, no answer was forthcoming. “We found there was a strong case against Sharma under FEMA. The case has now gone into adjudication,” a senior ED official told DNA.

The case against Sharma goes back to February 2000, when he was raided by the CBI after the investigating agency got information that he had accumulated wealth that was disproportionate to his known sources of income. “A raid at his Telegraph Lane residence yielded incriminating documents and large amounts of Indian and foreign currency,” said a CBI official.

There were documents pertaining to his flats, plots and shops in Hauz Khas, Dwarka, Noida and Gurgaon, a farm house in Kanganheri and land in Jammu and Kashmir. There was jewellery worth Rs7 lakh, Rs13 lakh in cash and foreign currency in excess of $8,000, as well as some share certificates. “Subsequently, we had referred the seizure of foreign currency to ED which began a probe under FEMA,” said a senior CBI official.

After the raid, Sharma, then additional commissioner of police, was suspended by commissioner Ajai Raj Sharma. He was reinstated. The CBI case is under trial at the moment. According to top officials in Delhi police, Sharma’s name was put on a secret list of officers with doubtful integrity, who are not to be given any sensitive postings. This was however, overlooked when he was put in charge of security for the Commonwealth games.

The funds allocated for security at the games run into hundreds of crores.
