The State Election Commission (SEC) has appointed nodal officers at all colleges in the state for enrolling new voters who have turned 18. Chief electoral officer of state election commission Anita Karwal also inaugurated Matdar Seva Kendra (Voters’ Service Centre) at Ahmedabad Collectorate on Saturday.

The SEC had, under the summary revision exercise, published a draft electoral roll. New voters who have reached 18 years on or before January 1, 2012 can enroll their names in this electoral roll.

“We have appointed nodal officers at all the professional and non-professional colleges to ensure that new voters are not deprived of their voting rights in the next assembly elections scheduled for 2012,” said Anita Karwal.

The VSC inaugurated at Ahmedabad collectorate is a first-of-its-kind attempt to help voters in Gujarat. It will provide voters with one-point solution for new enrollment, rectify errors, change of address among others. “We have set up 17 desks at assembly seats falling under Ahmedabad city where trained staff will assist voters in carrying out the necessary process,” said Vijay Nehra, Ahmedabad collector.

The election commission has also started 70 voters’ helplines in the state including five in Ahmedabad from where voters can know whether their names have been included in the list or not. Moreover, the commission has also organised a booth-level programme for updating electoral roll on September 8, 9, 15 and 16.

Nehra appealed to all eligible voters to ensure that their names are enrolled. “Many people complain that their names are missing from the electoral roll on election day. However, we cannot do anything on that day unless voters enroll themselves now,” he said.

The helpline number is 079-27560345 and the website which voters can source is www.ceo.gujarat.nic.in
