A 22-year-old science graduate was arrested here for allegedly stealing around 60 mobile phones from a South Delhi shopping mall where he was working as a security guard, police said on Sunday.

Govind Kumar Karn, hailing from Bihar's Samastipur and presently residing in Sangam Vihar, was caught on June 11 when he came to PVR Saket to sell some of the stolen mobiles, a senior police official said. Karn, an employee of a private firm Tiger Security, was working as a guard at Shoppers Stop Showroom in Saket from where around 60 mobiles were stolen on the nights of June one and June six besides some garments.

In both the incidents, the glass door of the showroom was broken. Around 40 mobiles, ladies purse and some garments were stolen in the first incident while in the second case, 19 mobiles were stolen.

Police suspicion fell on Karn and a tip-off that he would come to PVR Saket to sell stolen mobiles led to his arrest, the official said, adding during interrogation, he confessed to his crime.

The official said Govind, a science graduate from Darbhanga University, came to Delhi in March 2008. It was one Sandeep, friend of his brother-in-law Gautam Kumar Kanth, who helped him get the job in Tiger Security from where he was deployed at the showroom.

Karn along with Kanth, Sanjeev and Sandeep allegedly planned to commit theft at the showroom, the official quoted the guard as saying. In the first incident, Karn took his brother-in-law and Sandeep to the showroom and they entered by breaking open the
glass door.

Sanjeev kept waiting outside the mall in an auto-rickshaw and all of them left together and divided the booty between themselves, the official said. Next time, Govind while on night duty on intervening night of June five and six allegedly stole 19 mobiles mobile
phones from the counter inside the showroom and concealed them in the security control room.

He also opened the glass door to divert the investigation and he himself called his superiors when the alarm bell rang, the official said. Later, he allegedly took the mobiles to his house at different times by hiding them in his clothes. The official said five mobiles were recovered at the time of his arrest while 15 other mobiles were recovered from his
rented accommodation at Sangam Vihar. A hunt is on to nab the three others and recovery of mobile phones stolen during the first incident.
