Lamenting the delay in handing over the investigation into the alleged murder of British teenager Scarlett Keeling to the CBI, her mother today said that it led to the destruction of evidence.

"It would have been better if the case was handed over to the CBI soon after Scarlet was killed. The delay led to the evidence being destroyed," Fiona, who arrived in Goa to depose before the children’s court in her daughter' death, said.

The British schoolgirl holidaying with her mother was found dead at Anjuna beach in February 2008.

The state police had initially said that the death was caused by drowning, but later registered a murder case after Fiona launched a spirited campaign.

Fiona, who will depose before the court on July 30, alleged that the police sub-inspector Nerlon Albuquerque botched up the initial investigation by concluding that Scarlet's death was accidental and that there was no foul play.
