For once, the Congress party is not attacking the communal credentials of the BJP and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

Instead it is has picked on their ‘anti-democratic, autocratic and intolerant ways’.

Rapping them for the Sanjiv Bhatt’s arrest, Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that this is not an isolated case. “Anyone who raises a voice of protest against them is victimised and becomes a target of their vendetta,” he added.

According to the Congress, there is a long list of IPS officers who have been ‘harassed and victimised’ merely because they have gone against the government in the Gujarat riots case. This list includes-Kuldeep Sharma, RB Sreekumar, Rahul Sharma and Rajnish Rai apart from Bhatt. “So it is not the question of an individual officer, but the anti-democratic mindset of a state apparatus that wants to crush any voice that dares to question it,” he added.

Singhvi also emphasised that the accuracy or otherwise of the affidavits filed by Sanjiv Bhatt is not the issue. “The point is under which democratic system can you arrest a person simply because he has filed a complaint against a chief minister,” he added.
